Hoda ElMaraghy was appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2016 for her leadership and professional service as an engineer, including her appointment as the first female dean of a Canadian faculty of engineering.

ElMaraghy studied engineering in Egypt, but came to Canada to obtain her master’s and PhD from McMaster University, graduating in 1976. She has been a leader in her field of flexible manufacturing, including holding a related Canada Research Chair, while also being a leader for women in engineering. She was the first woman in Canada to obtain a PhD in mechanical engineering, and also the first female dean of a Canadian engineering faculty.
