Coombs came to theatre through painting scenery, eventually meeting Fred Rogers (of the children's show, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood). Coombs accompanied Rogers to Canada in 1963 as a puppeteer for children's programming. In 1967 he started his own children’s show, Mr. Dressup. He included crafts, reading, and imaginative play. After more than 4000 episodes, Coombs retired from his show in 1996. Coombs became a Canadian citizen in 1994 and a member of the Order of Canada in 1996.
