Buono came to Canada with his family in 1953, played football in college and in the Canadian Football League and retired as a player in 1977. He moved into coaching, notably serving as head coach for the Calgary Stampeders from 1990-2003, and the BC Lions from 2003-2011 and 2016-2018.
