Jennie Trout graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, and passed her examinations from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ontario, in 1875.

Poor health compelled Jennie Trout to retire from practice as a doctor in 1881, and she turned her energies to causes such as the advancement of women and the temperance movement.

Trout moved to Canada West in 1860 to attend Normal School in Toronto. A personal illness motivated her to study medicine and, after fighting for admission, she passed qualifying courses in 1872. In 1875, she graduated from medical school in the United States. She became the first woman licensed to practice medicine in Canada.
