Born in a Rwandan family, Corneille grew up in Germany and Rwanda. His family was murdered during the 1994 genocide. He fled to Germany, moving to Canada in 1997 for university. While studying, he joined a band and began his music career as a singer and songwriter, influenced by soul and R&B styles.
